Demonising Real Food

Demonising Real Food

One of the things that frustrates me the most (and makes me feel sorry for the consumer trying to do the right thing) is the blatant demonising of whole foods that you can see everywhere on social media platforms. This can be anything from killer chia seeds to deathly spinach or cholesterol-raising eggs.

How is anyone going to feel confident in what they're eating?!

Many of these arguments for anti-nutrients or foods that cause problems are not looking at it from a holistic perspective. The times that people have an issue with whole foods (made by nature in their pure form) is more likely a reflection of the system itself.

Meaning… food sensitivities and reactions dramatically increase the more compromised your gut and immune functions are.

Additionally, there are several cooking practices that very easily reduce any of these issues:

  • Soaking your grains can break down phytic acid.
  • Cooking foods degrades lectins.
  • Fermenting foods breaks down difficult proteins that can be hard for a weakened body to digest.

So, if your body has only recently not liked a particular food, try and receive it as a message from your physiology that it needs some healing or support before thinking that Mother Earth has made foods to harm us.

Gut Tip

Believe it or not, anywhere from 20-30% of the Australian population are constipated! This is NOT normal.

Many people that have this digestive challenge either think it’s normal or just learn to live with it. I would like to flag that constipation alone as a symptom can be a serious issue and be the root cause to other health challenges such as hormone imbalances, skin issues, liver problems, inflammation, and gastrointestinal dysbiosis such as SIBO.

So, what can you do about it?

  • Clean up your diet to include more homemade, whole foods that are high in fibre.
  • If that is already the case, try adding slippery elm, flaxseed oil or magnesium citrate, which can effectively hold more water in the large intestine and colon.

Natural Remedy Tip

Let’s talk about ear infections!

They are a very common child ailment that can be uncomfortable but are often overprescribed with antibiotics. One of the best remedies to make or have in the home is mullein and garlic ear oil. It both eases pain and fights infection effectively if you get onto it straight away.
